The Windows Walk trail leads you through the goldmining trail dating back to the 1880s, including remains of the old Talisman Battery Plant. Or, venture deep down into the Karangake Tunnels which take you along the old underground railway track used for mining back in the days. Pro tip: take a torch.

It is a flat walk and if you a keen birdwatcher, take along your binoculars and you will have the opportunity to observe shore birds in the estuary and the wetlands. About two hours outside of Auckland, Karangake Gorge Historic Walkway in Karangake, New Zealand, used to be a gold mine in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Today, it''s an eerie hiking spot complete with rusty mining equipment, pitchblack tunnels, and abandoned train tracks to nowhere.

Easter 2013 our small group did three walks: Wentworth Falls (near Whangamata) follows the stream to the lookout and top of the Falls. It is a steady climb through native bush. Well worth the effort.
