At least 50 people are presumed dead after an artisanal gold mine collapsed near Kamituga in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mine was the second such facility to collapse in a week. The mine collapsed on Friday afternoon following heavy rain, a local mining NGO told Reuters.
Eastern DR Congo is also home to an estimated 160,000 to 200,000 gold miners who work in about 1,000 artisanal mining sites. The Butuzi site, located in the Mitumba Mountains, is one of them. It occupies an area that was once dominated by an Afromontane forest, now almost completely deforested.
Gold, diamonds, cobalt, copper and oil are major resources that are mined from the region; most mining is small scale, artisanal, and unregulated. Recently, mining groups have targeted coltan and cassiterite, rare minerals used in electronics such as mobile phones.
